Day 100: The Wonder of Easter…And Spotting the Bunny on a Rock

Bennett is old enough to understand Easter this year. It’s a strange time to celebrate a holiday. But we are still talking about it and getting excited.

We haven’t been to the grocery store in a week or two and ordered grocery store pick up and they were out of ham. Normally, I’d drive around to different stores to get one. It’s a small tradition we adhere to. But I’m not sure about this year. We might be living off pasta.

In lieu of everything going strange in the world, Bennett and I like to get outside. On our walk, he stopped and pointed to a rock, and said, “Look, it’s the Easter bunny!” I turned my head, and there it was! I felt some magic and wonder on the 100th day of the year, the Easter spirit.

Day 95: I missed it

Day 95 was yesterday. I missed my post. Today I’ll do two. Yesterday I forgot what day of the week it was. Friday? Thursday? It was Saturday. I haven’t slept a full night’s sleep in a week. With B out of school, our schedule has been….what? Not a schedule. The past two days the temperature hovered around 40. Too cold to play in the driveway or take family walks with Shiloh around the neighborhood. This made me realize I really appreciated when it was beautiful out. 70. No mosquitos yet. Not humid. I could live in 70 forever.

It’s been 21 days since we quarantined for the coronavirus. School has been difficult. Life has been…difficult? But also speckled with small beautiful moments that I want to swallow.

I slept 5 hours last night, up since 4:30 am when B entered our bed. What wonder did I experience yesterday? Being outside by myself is my wonder. Running. My ears almost froze off yesterday and I remember wondering how wild it was — to go from a tank top one day to freezing the next.

My mom also sent Nick and me masks in the mail. It’s now recommended everyone wears a mask. A scary time to be alive. Pray for all of us.

Day 93: How Many Balls Can You Fit in a Basketball Hoop?

This afternoon, as I finished my second Zoom class of the day, Nick asked, “Isn’t this crazy, you doing this wonder project during all this?” By *all this* I think we all know he means the global pandemic, a serious crisis. The coronavirus.

It is odd. Why this project? Why now? If you look back at why, I sensed a palpating anxiety. But now? It’s like we need daily wonder to just survive. It’s everyone that needs it. We are all grieving an old world, and are unsure of what our future world holds.

This afternoon was a gorgeous evening (the mosquitos aren’t here yet). And I learned two things: Nick is a secret chalk artist. And two, you can fit many balls into a single basketball hoop.

Pistol Pete!
Spot the flying golfball!

Day 92: Empty playgrounds

On a walk today, I gazed out at empty playgrounds. Basketballs and soccer balls nested in the lawn. It’s as if the kids dropped the balls and left all at once. It’s how the world feels/looks right now.

I wonder how the kids are doing, if they are playing, how often they dream of kicking a soccer ball with their friends again.
