Day 119: Zooming with College Friends

Wonder Year: A journey to find enchantment every day
366 Wonder Days Shared in 2020 — Now you can join me!

More time with my boy…puddle jumping 🙂 We went on a morning walk before I had an interview for an Assistant Director position for the Writing Center — which I got and am so excited about!

At 2 pm PST today, a family friend asked us to pray for her niece, incubated in the ICU due to COVID-19. We were sent a picture and asked to visualize her healthy, alive. She’s in her early thirties. Lives in New Jersey, in an apartment; she is not a healthcare worker. She is one of thousands of people hit by this illness.
It’s a lot.
Every single day, Nick says it’s like fighting for his life working in healthcare.
We are all fighting.
And while we fight, I find wonder in our hope. Hope that soon, we can hug again. Live again. Without fear.

Bennett is old enough to understand Easter this year. It’s a strange time to celebrate a holiday. But we are still talking about it and getting excited.
We haven’t been to the grocery store in a week or two and ordered grocery store pick up and they were out of ham. Normally, I’d drive around to different stores to get one. It’s a small tradition we adhere to. But I’m not sure about this year. We might be living off pasta.
In lieu of everything going strange in the world, Bennett and I like to get outside. On our walk, he stopped and pointed to a rock, and said, “Look, it’s the Easter bunny!” I turned my head, and there it was! I felt some magic and wonder on the 100th day of the year, the Easter spirit.

This photo was taken during my first trip to Trader Joe’s with B. It showed up on my Facebook memories. I looked at the two women in the background and it killed me. Hugging in public. This was 3 years ago. Tonight I’m holding out for hugs again.

I went on a walk yesterday, mid-quarantine. We are not sick, but are staying away from businesses (all that is open) and groups of people as much as possibly. On the walk I found a bunch of wild green onion. I pulled some on my way home to wash and then place in a vase. I had some last spring, and they sprout beautiful onion-fumed purple flowers. The smell was oddly wonderful. Scratchy and bitter and pungent.

The barista on campus knows my order and we will mutually miss each other. I hope she still gets paid as universities move to online teaching.
And if you want to know my order: small iced Americano but in a grande cup with extra ice. She adds a splash of soy milk and caramel drizzle too. The best.
My mom and two sisters are women in STEM! I love that about them. Today, my mom gave a talk to young girls in STEM!
On International Women’s Day — I’m lifting all women who do it all and bring other women up with them. She’s a doctor and in the Army and says, “You don’t need your whole life planned. You just need the next step.” Happy ladies day to all the women I love, adore, look up to, and cherish! #girlpower #womeninstem #giveheratedtalk @ted

Today we went to The Gathering Place, a ginormous and extravagant park in Tulsa, OK. It was the first 70 degree day this year — and I think everyone in a 100-mile vicinity had the same idea. It was packed!
To escape the crowds, we found a quiet area with lots of grass. We all sprawled out, relaxing under the mid-southern sun. It was wonderful. Happy leap year day! February 29th!
